Clear the Parts Units check box to use units specified on the Units tab of the dimension style. Click Save to save the change, and Done to close the dialog box. Note: The Part Units option overrides the setting for primary units on the Units tab. Secondary units always respect the unit setting on the Alternate Units tab. I am using an assembly from another coworker. The project is in Metric, but the assembly and sub assemblies were developed in Imperial. I know now to change the Document Settings to make it Metric, but when I go to iProperties to use occurrences, it still shows Feet.

Opening the individual parts and sub-assemblies; they are all set to Metric units. I know I can just input the information in metric, but I want to see the results in Metric, not Imperial. I seem to recall running into it on my at home, but it didn’t matter.

I need the display to be in metric for this work though. Short of rebuilding all the subassemblies and master assembly in the metric template, I don’t know how to get the display properties to change. The behavior does not make sense.

It sounds like a bug. Could you send me a file exhibiting the behavior directly johnson. I would like to take a look and see why the iProperties unit becomes out of sync with document unit. If I demote the parts into a sub assembly, edit in place the sub assembly then the units do not update – it retains the parent assembly units during Edit in Place. When Editing in place a sub assembly, the Document settings for the that Sub Assembly did not affect that current file, but are saved.

Opening the sub assembly independently displayed the Occurrences to match the Document settings changed during edit in place, and showed the correct Occurrence units to match the document settings. Going to the top level assembly and changing the Document Settings affected all sub assemblies, regardless of their individual unit settings.

I’m not sure this is a bug, as I can see where the parent level would drive the children. But I am surprised to see that even when activating the sub assembly for editing, and allowing me to edit the Occurrences, it doesn’t recognize the change in units. I cannot share my client’s files; but I was able to recreate the above using blank, new part and assembly files.

I think I know why it behaves this way now. It does look a bit confusing but I believe there is an explanation. The behaviors you are seeing is that in the iProperties dialog, some properties are based on the unit in top-level assembly doc setting but other properties are based on the unit in its own doc. To be specific, Properties in Occurrence tab are based on the unit in top-level assembly. This is because the concept of occurrences only lives in top-level assembly.

The component documents subassemblies and parts do not know how they are used in top-level assembly and how many occurrences are there and where they are located. Properties in Physical tab are evaluated based on its own document unit.

This is because the properties indeed come from geometry within the document. As a result, it is logical to honor its own document unit. This confusion is sort of led by individual component documents and the sense of context. If all components reside in one document, there would not be a confusion like this. Inventor does not support local internal components yet. Certainly, there are advantages of having everything in one document data management, control of design intent, and geometry referencing.

However, there are disadvantages too. Performance and capacity can be an issue. The singular component file can be bigger than distributed components. Building a large assembly can be difficult. When there is something wrong with the file, the entire assembly would need to be redone. Regardless, I personally think it might be a good option for small assembly. I agree with your analysis, with one point of clarification. The Occurrences do occur at the sub assembly level, not just the Top assembly level.

From the Top Assembly the sub assemblies’ occurrences are greyed out, but visible in the units of the Top Assembly level Select a part from a sub assembly at the top level assembly, right click iProperties.

Upon editing the sub assembly from within the Top Assembly, the occurrences at the sub assembly level are able to be edited and the parts will move within the sub assembly accordingly – but the unit default is the Top Assembly units; not the sub assembly set units Changing the sub assembly units makes no difference. To see the sub assembly units, the sub assembly must be opened not edited. I like the way Inventor handles assemblies, and as we are often dealing with incredibly large assemblies, I like being able to break the assemblies down into manageable chunks.
